Van Isle 360 – 2007

I did a partial Van Isle 360 in 2007. Our boat was particularly slow so I took a lot of photos of the backs of other boats. The only boat slower than us was the HMCS Oriole. That boat was launched in 1921 and had no winches so it only ever tacked twice in a race – once to go out to the middle of the Georgia Strait and one more tack towards the destination. Part of the reason our boat was slow was it was heavy due to its nice comfortable bunks. The other boats were stripped down with at most a hammock for sleeping. I only did the portion of the race from Nanaimo to Port Hardy. I decided not to do the west coast of the island which involved overnight sailing and a lot of sea sickness.
