Kayaking Bella Bella – Part 3

This last part is shorter on commentary and longer on photos.

There were often wolf tracks along the beach in the morning although we never saw a wolf (first photo below). That was the first I had heard of sea wolves (if you haven’t already watched “Island of the Sea Wolves” on Netflix it is worth it). We were mostly protected from the big rollers by islands but did do some kayaking on the outside (next stop Japan). That was interesting. Close to some of the smaller islands it became dangerous because the rollers would hit the shelf, increasing the wave size and then crash into the islands with quite a force. With multiple islands around, the waves appeared to be coming from every direction.

This trip to the islands near Bella Bella and the one to Haida Gwaii were extraordinary once in a lifetime experiences for me – thanks to Ron & Claire – two extraordinary people with lots of kayaking experience. Just to give you an idea, every once in a while Claire would pull out a piece of wood with fishing line wrapped around it, catch some fish and cook it for the four of us. Always positive, they made those trips relaxing and enjoyable.

Both trips were amazing but I decided to leave it at that (to not push my luck) and live with the memories I had, so gave up kayaking. I did get into kayaks a few times after that (had a couple on our sailboat) but usually paid the price with a day or two of back pain.

PS – we did eventually run out of water so had to hike along a stream to refill the water bladders (second photo below).
