Rainy day here in Nanaimo – so looking at some old photos. Below a trip to Glendale Cove, Knight Inlet – September a few years ago. The intention was to watch the Grizzlies during the salmon run in the estuary but – salmon are on a 4 year cycle and 4 years previously there was an avalanche that killed off the salmon during spawning – so one out of every 4 years, there is no salmon run in this estuary. My favourite photo is the first one – grizzly cub – unusual to find at this time of year. Cubs are usually born during hibernation and often by the time the hibernation is over the cubs are already 3 months old. Interestingly if a pregnant female grizzly is unable to bulk up enough to support cubs during hibernation, her body will automatically abort the pregnancy.
