Trastevere

We were a little surprised at the size of the crowds in Rome compared to 10 years earlier. On the second night, Julie came across a blog on a less travelled area of Rome – the Janiculum Hill in Trastevere. Some of the more interesting approaches to guided tours are illustrated in the photos: small, coloured Fiats; coloured scooters with side cars. We of course walked.

On the hill: there was a puppet show going on for the children. The hill also has some nice views of the city.

There is a lighthouse on the hill: Faro del Gianicolo – obviously of no navigational significance, it was donated to the city of Rome by a community of Italians in Argentina to commemorate the battles for the Roman Republic that took place in 1849.

On the way back down the hill – Julie in front in one photo and a man with a walking stick in another (a Travesterean – rather than my usual man with a walking stick – Bruce).
